When it comes to buying a drum set, you can spend as little as $200 and as much as $600 on just the basics. Adding accessories and name brands can add hundreds (even thousands) to the price, but no worries: kits are always a great investment. Whether you're playing with your buddies in the garage, getting started with lessons or playing regularly, a great drum kit never collects dust. A basic set will include a snare and bass drum as well as tom (or tom-tom) drums and cymbals. Tom drums usually consist of three drums: a high, mid, and floor drum. Ride, crash and hi-hat cymbals are all common, but an individual can learn on just a ride cymbal along with a snare and bass drum.
Name brands drum sets include:
- Ayotte
- CB700
- DW
- Gretsch
- Ludwig
- Mapex
- Pearl
- Premier
- Remo
- Slingerland
- Sonor
- Tama
- Yamaha
When buying a drum set, keep in mind the cheaper kits will not be as sturdy or have the same sound quality as more expensive sets. The price of the set can often suggest the longevity of it as well. Ultimately, your price range and needs can be met through discounted kits and online shopping. Keep in mind all sets can be upgraded. Accessorizing your set can include any and all of the following:
- Cymbal Stand
- Snare Stand
- Hi Hat Stand
- Hi Hat Clutch
- Foot Pedals (for the bass)
- Seats (also called thrones)
- Legs (for the floor tom)
- Tom Mounts
- Rack Systems
- Drum Key
One problem beginners might have with their new drum set is knowing where to start. One of the first things you might want to do is get comfortable with your new set. Set some time aside to be surrounded by the set and to get comfortable with gripping your new drumsticks. On television and movies, you might see characters carrying their drumsticks around. Although a stereotype, this practice allows a beginner to become familiar with their new equipment in order to get the best out of one's drumming experience.
While listening to your favorite music and playing along might be a great way to learn for the trained ear and those with inborn rhythmic abilities, don't be afraid to reach out for lessons and experience. Private lessons can be a great way to learn the basics and beyond on your new drum set. The best approach to private lessons is to select material that you enjoy and by providing it for your instructor. Let them know what you are interested in and what you expect. Because it is easy to pick up bad habits from private lessons, consider trying out several teachers and be willing to change up your style while incorporating different techniques.
Instructional videos and DVDs can be great tools as well. You can replay footage and go at your own pace with media sources. They also aren't as expensive as private lessons and you can trade up different video lessons as you please. Online drum lessons afford the same freedom. These lessons provide the basics to proper drumming techniques and give great tips on how to practice effectively.

If you can't read music, acoustic guitar tabs are the way to go for learning new songs. The internet is loaded with tab sites that will most definitely have the song you are looking for. I must say, the ones you pay for are usually better than the free ones but it is not always the case.
When you are searching for acoustic guitar tabs, have a guitar with you. The reason I recommend doing this is because you will want to play through it a little bit to check for accuracy. If the tune sounds real bad find another one and try that. When you find the one that you like and sounds good print out that one. Don't just print the first one you find. I have got myself a great collection of awful acoustic guitar tabs from students who just print out the first one they find and assume it's right.
Another thought to keep in mind is this. Just because you found it on the internet does not mean it is right. Acoustic guitar tabs are not correct just because someone on a site said they were. The reason that I want you to know this is so you don't think you suck at guitar because you can't get a song to sound right. I don't want you to give up because you have an acoustic guitar tab that tells you the wrong chords!
Building you collection of tabs is important. I recommend getting a folder that you can keep all of your tunes in. This way it is easy to find when you want to review a part later on down the road. It is a good way to remind you what songs you know. Sounds weird but after a few years you will have so many acoustic guitar tabs that you will start forgetting the tunes that you worked on. That's actually a very good feeling.
So grab yourself a folder and fill it up with acoustic guitar tabs and start playing!

Forget being stranded on a desert island, its almost the end of March and it feels like it's the middle of winter, its blowing a blizzard outside, its freezing, its too cold to leave my warm home without a good reason. I guess I'm kind of stranded indoors.
So here I am sitting looking out the window at this miserable Scottish weather wishing I was stranded on a beautiful and warm deserted island, {somewhere in the Caribbean would do very nicely}. So I thought why not create my own version of that well known radio show My Desert Island Disks.
Just like on the BBC Radio 4 show My Desert Island Disks, I get to choose 8 of my favourite records, one book (excluding the bible, other religious works and Shakespeare, as these are already waiting for me} and one luxury item {which must be inanimate and have no practical use}, these are the things I get to take with me if I were to be stranded on a desert island.

I blame Eminem.
Prior to his sampling of Dido on his 2000 track Stan, I would have assigned Rap to the domain of angry disenfranchised African Americans like Iced Tea, Tupac Shakur or Snoop Doggy Dog. Now it would seem that most of the Top 40 is riddled with Rap Artists.
So when did Rap become mainstream? Is it that Rap Music has become more melodic or have we just broadened our listening tastes?
Basically Rap is a form of rhyming lyrics spoken rhythmically with a musical backdrop and, love him or hate him, Eminem has managed to bring Rap squarely into the Top 40 realm. Witness the turnaround of mainstream commentators who once claimed he and his lyrics would poison our childrens minds to his 2002 Oscar win for Lose Yourself from the film 8 Mile. The comparisons to the King himself, Elvis Presley are inevitable. And like the Rolling Stones, who helped translate blues to the white mainstream, Eminems lyrical talents turn stinging lyrics into hum-a-long pop tunes.
But Eminem is not the first white artist to create crossover hits from the Rap genre. From Bob Dylans 1965 Subterranean Homesick Blues to Blondies 1981 Rapture to 1986s Aerosmith Run DMC collaboration Walk This Way and even Vanilla Ices 1990 Ice Ice Baby. And now the likes of 50 Cent, Nelly, Ludacris, Beastie Boys, Missy Elliott, Beyonce, Outkast, Usher and The Game continue the tradition.
Is it mere coincidence that Hate It Or Love It on The Games 2005 CD The Documentary reminds me of PM Dawns 1997 hit Set Adrift On Memory Bliss?
Is it the increasing reliance on sampling of other hits which have permeated our subconscious or using broader instrumentation and orchestration or the synthesized electronically programmed equivalent that pushes these tracks up the charts? Or is it the catchy choruses? I mean it may be just me, but who, but the most street cred Rap connoisseur, understands the allegorical coda of these yrics, while we can all hum or sing a long to the chorus just enough to want to buy or download the track and maybe even the whole album.
And it seems now that almost every rapper has at least one or two ballad style tracks, preferably with an R & B style mainstream artist to assist with that crossover. 2002s Dilemma duet of Nelly and Destiny Childs Kelly Rowlands or Work It with Justin Timberlake from the same album proves the rapper can also sing in these fusions of Soul meets Rap which hit the top of the charts and stay there.
So has Rap become mainstream or does the likes of Eminem merely represent a contrived marketing plan by Record Companies to pick up where Pop has sadly left off. Now that boy bands have almost died out and the titanic phenomenon that is American (or substitute your own country here) Idol has steamrollered over the singer/songwriter traditional pop consciousness has Rap merely mellowed to fill the void?
Sadly I cannot answer these questions definitively. The music industry and the record buying public are a fickle lot. Technology brings a two edged sword of making more music more available by downloading but also shrinking the market place income to the need for record companies to rely on sure things.
And Rappers arent that different to any other musician or anyone else with something to sell. They may be in the industry for all very noble purposes of being an artist or saying something important with their lyrics. But ultimately they too want to sell their records and make money and live comfortable celebrity lifestyles.
So Rap music over time has become more commercial and more digestible to the mass black and white audiences. Melodies are now familiar to Generation X, Y and Z and the Baby Boomers. Remixed to suit nightclub or coffee shop audiences.
And ultimately no matter how cynically we want to look at it, the more variety of music there is out there the more diverse our listening habits become.
And that can only be a good thing.

Belgium is not only a good place for chocolate. Although many ladies would find newcomer Kaye Styles to be quite a delectable offering. Kaye Styles, born in Ghana on the 8th of November 1981 as Kwasi Gyasi, immigrated with his parents from West Africa to Belgium at the age of five. After his parents were deported, Kaye was forced to live in hiding for three years with a Belgian couple void of official papers from the government. This was not easy for him but after these years his parents were allowed to live in Belgium and they returned, but Kaye stayed officially with his foster parents until his 18th birthday.
It was positive attitude combined with his passion for music that kept young Kwasi going, music was his way of escaping the world, his way of communicating and reaching other people. In his teens Kaye (short for Kwasi) started to go out at parties and clubs and noticed that some DJs brought an MC with them.
When Kaye bonded his MC abilities with the music he surrounded himself with he realized that what he also wanted to do. Kaye combined mc'ing, rapping, and singing with his silky vocals and people couldn't believe what they were hearing, was it really that young man doing all this besides the DJ? People who frequently visited clubs where Kaye was performing started asking him how it was possible that he was combining different kind of 'STYLES' while giving it his unique touch.
Kaye Styles reputation started to build quickly and strongly in the underground scene. After performing at a friend's club (his future manager) Kaye began to realize that he could be more than a MC and he could achieve more when showcasing his own written and composed songs. At the age of 22 Kaye recorded his first demo song Crazy. Kaye soon joined Mostiko Records and offered him a five album deal. He started recording 'his' own songs now with professional producers and engineers.
Three months later, in the summer of 2004, Kaye flew to Los Angeles to shoot his first ever video for his single Gimme the Mic. The track became a top 20 European Billboard hit and people wanted to hear more. Kaye's first album titled True definition of Styles saw the light in October 2004. The record company released two other singles of the album and they both reached the top 50 on Billboard. Kaye Styles began touring Belgium, Holland, Germany, France and Morocco, reaching and touching fans in places he never dreamed of getting to when he was young. He was nominated for the 1st time at the MTV Belgian music awards for best R&B act in 2004.
January 2005 Kaye made his first cut for his second album, Profile and after performing it live at the Belgian Euro Vision Contest in front of a million TV viewers everybody knew that it would gain momentum. Profile entered the Billboard charts at number three and stayed there for 10 weeks. Kaye Styles then released his second album It iz what it iz. Maria Bonita and Safe Sex, a song he made to build AIDS awareness became another top hit.
He was nominated again at the MTV Belgian music awards for Best Urban Breakthrough artist in 2005. But the best was yet to come. In 2006 his manager received a phone call from the US television group Fox asking if Kaye Styles would be interested in producing the soundtrack for the Prison Break series in Belgium, a show that was at the time a massive hit in the states. Kaye accepted and made Prison Break Anthem. The track hit the stores and entered the sales charts at number 40, jumped to 11 and peaked at 3. It remained in the top 10 for 14 weeks and became the second biggest airplay hit in Belgium in 2006.
Kaye Styles recorded his third album Main Event and the singles Hold Me Now and Don't Cry became top 10 songs. He was nominated for a third time at MTV Belgian music awards (best R&B, best video, best national artist 2006). The last single Styles released for the Main Event was Cheat on you, also this song reached top 20 on the Billboard charts.
After touring Europe at the start of 2007, Kaye Styles and his management decided that the US and the Caribbean countries should be the new musical adventure they should aim for. His management purchased Kaye's contract from the record company and they started their own Company 'On Lock Entertainment'.
Kaye Styles records his forth album First Born (release April 25 2008) and works with Producers from New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and teams up for his new single Shawty with Tariq L and Akon. Kaye is also touring the States in June and July 2008 on the Hennessy Artistry Tour to come back and conquer Europe again in the Summer.

How to Write Songs Like a Pro - Part 2
In "Part 1" of this three-part series we learned pro songwriting tips for the lyrical aspect of songwriting. In this article we'll explore the music part of writing songs using the same references many pros use, so you can develop musical ideas with ease.
If you're a songwriter or aspiring songwriter who wants to know what resources to use to learn songwriting quickly and effectively, by the end of this article, you will have all the information you need to have a clear advantage over the average songwriter!
Remember, you don't have to read music or play an instrument to write quality songs but you definitely have an advantage if you know how to play either piano/keyboard or guitar, because you can work out chord structures and melodies for your songs on your instruments.
So here we go:
1. Remember, there are two main parts to songwriting; writing lyrics, and writing music. "Part 2" is about the music part of songwriting which includes melody, harmony, and rhythm.
2. Get your hands on "Writing Music For Hit Songs," by Jai Josefs, the absolute best and only book you'll ever need to easily learn the basics of music theory and how to construct the musical part of songs. The book is ridiculously cheap on Amazon.com, and this one together with "The Craft Of Lyric Writing," by Sheila Davis will set you back a measly US15.00 to 18.00 or so.
Once you have Josefs' book, apply one chapter at a time to the songwriting principles you learned with "The Craft Of Lyric Writing" and quickly hear your songwriting come alive as you learn techniques from real hit song examples! For this training book, you DO need to play or at least have an instrument such as a piano or keyboard to follow along.
In Josefs' book, you'll learn how to harmonize with chords in major and minor keys through a foolproof natural music formula in an easy-to-understand format, you'll learn how to effectively give your music contrast, how to build tension and release, and how to develop melodical ideas just to name a few.
3. Continue writing your own lyrics and melodies as suggested in "Part 1," and start experimenting with and incorporating some of the chord ideas as well as other principles learned in Josefs' book such as using chord inversions and pedal points to create bass motion in order to give your songs whatever particular underlying flavor you desire.
4. Pick out a favorite song and find the chord progression used either by buying sheet music or by visiting one of many websites which provide free chords and tabs for educational purposes such as Ultimate-Guitar.com. With your song in hand it's time to try to determine in which key the songs is written. Without actual sheet music to see the key signature this can be difficult but here's a useful tip; to find the key listen for the chord that sounds as if it has completely resolved and is at rest in the song. This chord will usually (not always) be found at the end of the chorus if it's a verse-chorus type song, or the end of the verse in a verse-verse-verse type song.
5. Once you determine the key use the following chord formula built on the tonic note of the key:
I - IIm - IIIm - IV - V - VIm - VIImb5 (e.g., in the key of G, the tonic note would be G, and the basic chord formula would be):
G - Am - Bm - C - D - Em - F#mb5
6. Play these chords in succession and hear how they move up the scale. Notice how they sound similar to the single note scale in the same key, i.e., G, A, B, C, D, E, F#
Using the above formula you now have seven chords you can use in any key to harmonize your songs!
Indeed many successful songs have been created using two or more chords contained in this formula, so in part 3 of this series I'll show you how to expand upon this concept with a formula for many additional chords you can use as a starting point in your songs in any key.

Learn To Play Guitar Tab - Happy Birthday To You
This is the time for you to learn the most popular song in the English language according to Guinness Book of World Records. You do not need to know sheet music. You only need a guitar so let's start!
We will use guitar tab notation which will show you where to put your fingers on your guitar strings as you play. We will explain how to use it later on.
Here are the lyrics:
Happy Birthday To You Happy Birthday To You Happy Birthday Dear_____ Happy Birthday To You
Let's learn to play the first line with guitar tab:
Happy Birthday To You
1. ----------------------
2. ---------------1--0---
3. -0--0--2--0-----------
What does the lines and numbers mean? Good question!
The three lines represent the three highest strings on your guitar. Highest in pitch that is! If you hold your guitar the usual way it will be the three strings nearest your feet.
The numbers indicate which fret you are to press down. 0 means that you play a string without pressing down a fret. This is called to play an open string.
The first notes 0 0 2 0 means that you play the third open string twice, then play the second fret on the third string and then back to the third open string.
Hopefully you are recognizing the melody by now!
We will now learn the next line with guitar tab:
Happy Birthday To You
1. ---------------------
2. ---------------3--1--
3. -0--0--2--0----------
What right hand finger should you use? Well, there are many ways to play this song. If you are a complete beginner maybe you can use your right hand thumb to pluck the notes. It should be the easiest way to play the melody, I guess.
We will now learn to play the third line with guitar tab. We will use a name. Let's take the name Peter, that is my name by the way! :
Happy Birthday Dear Peter
1. -------3--0-----------
2. -------------1--0-----
3. -0--0--------------2--
What about the left hand fingers? You can of course use your index finger to play all the notes.
This way to play guitar will work with slow easy pieces but it does not work with more complicated guitar melodies and when you start to play pieces with more than one not at a time.
If you want to learn to play guitar in a more professional way you can use your left hand index finger to play the notes on the first fret, the middle finger to play the notes on the second fret and the ring finger for the third fret.
Time to finish this guitar lesson!
We will now learn to play the last line with the following guitar tab:
Happy Birthday To You
1. --1--1--0-----------
2. -----------1--3--1--
3. --------------------
